Decrease in Money Forces Cultural Institutions to Scramble

1. what is this article about?
its about all the art and cultural institutions suffering because of how bad the economy is. Michelle Kranicke owns one of those institutions called Zephyr Dance company in illinois. she thought her dance company would make it through the bad times in 2009 but the first grant she was expecting, for $4,990, that was supposed to show up in january didnt come until may because of the state's financial downturn. Ms. Kranicke had to suspend payments to her dancers because she couldnt pay them on time. her dance company is now having free rehersals in hopes that it will build an audience that might come back for a show. art and cultural institutions all across illinois arent doing well and the year ahead doesnt look good either. some of the big museums can weather financial setbacks but most of the smaller places dont have much to fall back on.

2. why did you choose it?
i chose it because it seemed intresting.

3. do you agree with whats happening in the news item you chose? why or why not?
yes because people dont have the time or money to go to places like this anymore.

4. do you think the information has been presented fairly? why or why not?
yes. because they get everyone's side of the story and how the places in illinois are doing.

5. would you use this news source again?
yes.

  1. Christine, This was an interesting article, but you only read and summarized the second page of it. Also, in a world with limited resources, do you agree that a one-woman dance organization is the best place to allot them?
