Decrease in Money Forces Cultural Institutions to Scramble

1. what is this article about?
its about all the art and cultural institutions suffering because of how bad the economy is. Ms. Kranicke had to suspend payments to her dancers because she couldnt pay them on time. her dance company is now having free rehersals in hopes that it will build an audience that might come back for a show. art and cultural institutions all across illinois arent doing well and the year ahead doesnt look good either. some of the big museums can weather financial setbacks but most of the smaller places dont have much to fall back on.

Here we are again

Welcome back to current events after a few weeks of doing other things. I have now read and graded everything you've written and it seems that many of you are really getting a lot out of the assignment -- you've found interesting, informative, original articles that have a lot to do with your own lives, and your summaries and overall insights on these articles have been excellent.

Please don't fall into the trap, as some of you have, of finding and using the first article that remotely might have a little bit about money in it. Take some time to find something you're interested in. You have to do the assignment anyway; you might as well enjoy it and get something out of it.

Based on the score sheets I'm giving all of you, you'll have to do some entries on your own. I will accept posts up to December 24, midnight PST. That's 3 a.m. Christmas morning. Ho ho ho!

We've got three more sessions in the computer lab; please make the most of them.

Don't forget the 5 all-important questions:
1. What is your article about? Provide a brief summary.
2. Why did you choose it?
3. Do you agree with what's happening in the news item you chose? Why or why not?
4. Do you think the information has been presented fairly? Why or why not?
5. Would you use this news source again? Why or why not?

Don't forget to put the link in!!!

Happy writing!

1. What is this article about? Provide a brief summary.
An $11 million air safety study that asks pilots to reveal mishaps and problems they encounter which was sponsered by NASA didn't see any useful insights about U.S. flight safety.

2. Why did you choose it -- what did you find interesting about it?
I thought it was interesting because something thats supposed to help people feel safe while flying doesn't really show much safety at all.Now it was a waste of time to plan this safety study and also a waste of money.

3. Do you agree with what's happening in the story? Why or why not?
I do agree with the story because $11 million that was used to create a saftey plan for pilots is now down the drain.

4. Do you think the information has been presented fairly? Why or why not?
I think the informaation was presented fairly because the project was on for four years and NASA finally saw that it didnt really show safety at all.

10% jobless rate

1. What is this article about?
through the end of next year, the rate of unemployment in the U.S will stay at the same low, with some increase to 10%. Also, the economy will recover from its recession alot faster than the unemployment rate. Ms. Romer (the chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers) said that a survey of economic forecasters prepared by Blue Chip Economic Indicators, a research organization, forecast that unemployment would peak at 10.1 percent in the second quarter of 2010, up from 9.8 percent last month, and would be at 9.6 percent at the end of next year.

2. Why did you choose it -- what did you find interesting about it?
i have chose this information to blog about because it can effect my life. Next year i will be in college, and if i dont have the job i do now, i will be looking for a new one. If the unemployment rate is increasing, it will be hard for me to get a job. This article intrigues me because almost everyone is worried about this crisis.

3. Do you agree with what's happening in the story? Why or why not?
i think this article is a pretty accurate representation of the prediction of the economy

4. Do you think the information has been presented fairly? Why or why not?
somewhat, because it doesnt necessarily give the opinion of two sides, but i think everyone can agree with it.

5. Would use this news source again? Why or why not?
